Portable Amenities Block Adapt Modular Homes

It was more than just a portable amenities block...

When a school sits on the edge of the Simpson Desert, over 1,900 kilometres from the Sunshine Coast, upgrading its facilities requires more than just a standard construction plan. It requires resilience, precise logistics, and a genuine commitment to the community.

Recently, our team had the privilege of putting this value into action for Bedourie State School. The school required a highly specialised person with disabilities (PWD) bathroom for a non-verbal student who uses a wheelchair. This was not just a construction job, it was about creating a safe, comfortable, and dignified space that would drastically improve a student's daily life.

Navigating Extreme Weather and Logistical Hurdles

Delivering portable amenities blocks across vast distances is always a carefully managed process. However, the outback weather had its own schedule.

We encountered a massive four-month delay because wet-season rains in far north Queensland completely severed the roads through the country heading toward Lake Eyre. We had no choice but to wait for the roads to dry out to ensure the safe transport of the facility.

When the transport routes opened, our dedicated installation team mobilised immediately. The journey took two full days of driving to reach the site, followed by another two days for the return trip.

The timing was nothing short of miraculous. Just one weekend after the installation of these Amenities blocks QLD was finalised, Bedourie was hit with another heavy downpour, and the regional roads were closed all over again. It was a remarkably tight window, but we are driven to deliver on our promises, no matter the challenge.

Designing Purpose-Built Prefabricated Amenities Blocks

When it comes to modular amenities Queensland schools can rely on, a one-size-fits-all approach simply does not work.

Our goal was to ensure the student had access to a safe, dignified, and highly functional space. To achieve this, the purpose-built modular bathroom blocks included several specific features:

  • A high-capacity ceiling hoist: Installed to ensure safe, secure, and comfortable transfers.

  • An automatic sliding door: Providing seamless, barrier-free access in and out of the facility.

  • A specialised adult change table: Custom-fitted specifically for the student’s requirements.

  • Desert-ready air-conditioning: Essential climate control to manage the harsh outback temperatures.

  • A back-to-base alarm system: Delivering immediate alerts and essential peace of mind for teaching staff.

  • Fully accessible fixtures: Thoughtfully positioned fittings to maximise usability and independence.

  • A custom ramp and fly-over roof: Protecting the entrance and the student from the extreme outback elements.

By utilising prefabricated amenities blocks, we ensured every high-specification detail was perfected before the building ever began its long journey west.

A Massive Outback Team Effort

Building in a remote location requires creative problem-solving. We had to coordinate resources and skilled trades from across the region to successfully install these transportable amenities.

The coordination required a massive regional effort, bringing together a dedicated team.

The concrete supplier travelled two hours south from Birdsville.

The electrician drove three hours north from Boulia.

The crane we required took two entire days to travel from Longreach.

The soil tester made a massive 840-kilometre journey from Barcaldine just to reach the site.

Delivering on our promises

This project at Bedourie State School is a prime example of how highly modular amenities blocks can change lives, even in the most remote corners of Australia.

Your home, your school, and your community are more than just structures. They are where memories are made and lives are shaped.
